About the Awards

Metropolis‘s annual Planet Positive Awards are an opportunity to celebrate the progress you are making toward design for a regenerative and equitable future. We have a variety of categories for entries—projects that aren’t certified can enter our innovation awards, and we have special recognitions for students and instructors.


The Benefits

Winners of the 2024 Metropolis Planet Positive Awards will be:

Submissions

Fees:

  • Best Educator Award Pricing ($50 - the system will automatically charge $50 when the category is selected)
  • Best Student Work Award Pricing (FREE - the system will automatically charge $0 when the category is selected)
  • Early-bird Pricing for Innovation, Products, & Projects: July 12, 2024 ($275)
  • Regular Pricing for Innovation, Products, & Projects: August 16, 2024 ($300)​​​​​​

Refunds are not available for submissions once they have been formally entered. Submissions made that do not follow specifications are disqualified, and we will, unfortunately, not be able to provide a refund. ​​

 

Project Eligibility

Eligible Submitters: Architecture and Interior Design Firms

Eligible Projects:

  • Projects must be completed in the last three years (July 2021-June 2024). 
  • Projects must be certified or pursuing certification under at least one of the following standards: BREEAM, CASBEE, LEED, LEED Safety Rating, Living Building Challenge—Full, Living Building Challenge—Petals, Passivhaus, ReLi, Three Star System, Well Building Standard, Zero Carbon, Net Zero, Passive House, or other regional sustainability standards.

Categories Include: Civic/Cultural, Educational, Healthcare, Hospitality, Landscape, Multifamily/Mixed-use, Showroom/Retail, Workplace, and Single-Family Home.

Innovation Eligibility

Eligible Submitters: Architecture and Interior Design Firms + Manufacturers 

Eligible Projects:

  • Projects must be completed in the last three years (July 2021-June 2024). 
  • Projects DO NOT need to be certified or pursuing certification.

Eligible Categories for A&D Firms Include: Best Unbuilt Project, Best Overall Decarbonization, Best Embodied Carbon Reduction, Best Innovation in Material and Product Use in Projects, Best Community Engagement, Best Social Impact, Best Water Conservation and Management, Best Impact on Health and Wellness, Best Design for Resilience

Eligible Products:

  • Products must be released in the last two years (June 2022-June 2024). 

Eligible Categories for Manufacturers Include: Best Innovation in Material and Product Use in Products & Best Manufacturer Corporate Sustainability Initiative

Product Eligibility

Eligible Submitters: Designers, Manufacturers, Architects, Distributors, and Showrooms

Eligible Products: Products must be released in the last two years (June 2022-June 2024). 

Eligible product designs include but are not limited to: Architectural Systems and Facades, Flooring-Soft (Carpet), Flooring-Hard, Furniture-Office, Furniture-Outdoor, Kitchen + Bath, Lighting, Lighting-Outdoor, Paint, Surfaces- Tiles -Materials, Technology and Tools, Textiles, and Walls + Ceilings

People Eligibility

Firm of the Year:
This award recognizes one architecture and interior design firm for all-round leadership on design for sustainability, wellness, equity, and resilience.

Rising Star:

This award recognizes early- and mid-career individuals who have made significant contributions to sustainable, equitable, healthy, and resilient design at their firms.

Eligibility:

  • 1-10 years since their terminal degree
  • Working in the United States or Canada

Best Student Work:

This award recognizes rigorous and visionary work by a student of architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, or planning that focuses on design for a sustainable, healthy, resilient, equitable, and regenerative future.

Eligibility:

  • Undergraduate or graduate students currently enrolled in a college or university located in the US or Canada
  • Students majoring in architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, or planning

Best Educator:

This award recognizes educators in architecture, interior design, and landscape architecture who nurture creative approaches to future challenges in the next generation of professionals.

Eligibility:

  • Undergraduate or graduate professors currently teaching in a college or university located in the US or Canada
  • Professors teaching architecture, interior design, and landscape architecture classes

When is the submission deadline?

All materials for submission must be provided by the deadline (August 16, 12:00 PM ET). Submissions that do not follow specifications will be disqualified without notice or refund. 

How does Early-bird pricing work?

If you complete and submit your entire entry by midnight on July 12th, 2024, you'll enjoy an automatic discount of $25 off each submission, reducing your entry fee from $300 to $275. 

What if I have questions?

Can I start my entry then return to it later?

Yes, you may begin your entry, save, and revisit it at any time prior to completing your payment. To access your in-progress entries, go to the "my account" link on the top right-hand side of the page. You will find a menu on the left with "My Entries".

Can I submit more than one entry?

Yes, you can submit more than one entry to multiple categories. 

Can I edit or change my entry once it has been submitted?

If you need to make a vital change to a submitted entry, please email awards@metropolismag.com
